Hear Him Whistle
Seen through the slats of a wardrobe: a moonlit farmhouse bedroom, and in the lit doorway a tall man in a wide-brimmed hat, hands in his pockets, face in shadow.

A hiding game from Lost Island · Headphones on

If you can hear him whistle, he isn't looking.

He comes up the gravel drive just after dark with his hands in his pockets, whistling a tune nobody taught him. He's in no hurry. He never is. When the whistling stops, he's listening.

Taped inside the pantry door, in pencil

  1. The whistling means he's walking.
  2. When it stops, he's listening.
  3. Hold your breath. Not too long.
  4. Don't hum along. You'll want to.

One night. One hiding place.

Headphones help: he moves left and right. Press Begin, then pick a place before he reaches the porch. Once he's inside, hold Space or the Hold breath button while he's listening nearby. Let go before your lungs give out.

The house is quiet. Somewhere out past the barn, a screen door you don't own bangs once.

Ashgrove Road, after dark

Five houses sit along Ashgrove Road. In the full game you hide in each of them, one night at a time: the farmhouse, the parsonage, the grain office, the lighthouse cottage, and the one at the end that nobody will name. Every house has its own sounds. He knows all of them.

A white farmhouse beside a cornfield at dusk, one upstairs window lit, a red bicycle in the grass, a swing on an oak, and a tiny figure in a hat at the tree line.
